Horace Mann, a private high school founded in 1887 in Riverdale, New York, and Val Bodurtha’s alma mater, featured The History Makers in its weekly paper, The Horace Mann Record. Val attended Horace Mann for high school, from 2010-2014.
The feature describes the inspiration behind The History Makers: an AP World History assignment that Val took to heart and by turning into a short story that ran 10 pages long.
Val’s AP History teacher and mentor, Dr. Susan Groppi, loved the imaginative story Val created. She then encouraged Val to turn the paper into a YA novel. That summer, Val worked on it for 2 hours every single day.
The hard work paid off! The finished product won the Young Writers book competition. “We loved how well Val wove her premise into the story. The setting already wowed us, but she kept the momentum going with a story that explored the most dangerous and shocking facets of their world”, said Ashley Stapleton, Editor at Booklogix Publishing.
The hard work didn’t stop there. After winning the competition, Val went through 3-4 editing rounds with the help of Booklogix’s professional editors. Finally, it become the finished product we know and love as The History Makers.
